The situation grows even more complicated during the peak travel season from March 15 to November 15, when restrictions on heavy vehicles are enforced. While this measure is intended to improve safety and protect the historic route, it often results in more cars and buses crowding the same narrow stretch. The resulting bottlenecks challenge drivers’ patience and can cause tensions to run almost as high as the nearby mountain peaks.

Hopes were high when plans for the Variante Tremezzina bypass were announced.
