Although the Regina Road offers stunning lake views and connects the charming towns between Colonno and Griante, it has also become famous for something a bit less delightful—traffic congestion. What was once a scenic route for both locals and tourists now tests the patience of anyone trying to navigate its winding lanes. The traffic congestion on Regina Road isn’t just a minor inconvenience; it greatly affects accessibility for local residents, sometimes turning quick errands into lengthy journeys. Additionally, limited construction projects and strict zoning laws in the area contribute to the ongoing struggle for residents seeking reliable transportation options.

Regina Road’s scenic beauty is rivaled only by its infamous congestion, turning quick trips between Colonno and Griante into true tests of patience.

Tourists, too, find themselves caught in the slow crawl, their excitement for lakeside adventures cooled by the reality of bumper-to-bumper delays.

The situation grows even more complicated during the peak travel season from March 15 to November 15, when restrictions on heavy vehicles are enforced. While this measure is intended to improve safety and protect the historic route, it often results in more cars and buses crowding the same narrow stretch. The resulting bottlenecks challenge drivers’ patience and can cause tensions to run almost as high as the nearby mountain peaks.

For local residents, these delays mean more than just wasted time—they can impact work schedules, appointments, and even access to essential services.

Hopes were high when plans for the Variante Tremezzina bypass were announced. This ambitious project promises to run parallel to Regina Road, offering a much-needed relief valve for the relentless traffic congestion. However, the excitement has been tempered by repeated delays, with the bypass now expected to be completed around 2028 or 2029.

In the meantime, the very construction meant to help is creating its own set of problems. With an average of one blast every three to four days to carve out the new route, the Regina Road is frequently disrupted, leading to temporary closures, detours, and plenty of confusion for drivers.

These construction disruptions, combined with existing congestion, have raised concerns among local residents. There’s growing worry that the ongoing traffic issues could affect the region’s reputation as a welcoming destination, potentially discouraging tourism—a crucial source of income for the area. Additionally, the challenges faced by residents highlight the importance of car-free living as a viable alternative to mitigate traffic woes.

The overall quality of life in Colonno, Griante, and the neighboring towns is also at stake, as daily routines become more challenging and the peaceful lake atmosphere is replaced by the sounds of horns and construction equipment.

While the promise of the Variante Tremezzina shines on the horizon, for now, the journey along Regina Road remains an experience filled with delays, detours, and a dash of local charm.
